Over the weekend, General Motors and the United Automobile Workers Union (UAW), reportedly reached agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement. While details remain sketchy, press reports indicate that signing bonuses, retention of modest pension and medical benefits, and wage increases for entry-level lower tier workers were part of the package.
What can VFX workers learn from this?? That twenty-first-century labor unions get it. There are ways for American companies to work constructively with the unions that represent their workforce to work together so that American jobs are preserved and American businesses remain competitive in the global economy.
Given the opportunity, the IATSE will do the same thing with Southern California visual effects facilities. Just give us a chance to show you what we can do. We'll even get you portable medical insurance benefits.
